Аннотация

В статье исследуется деятельность сирийских христианских интеллектуалов и их роль в процессе зарождения сирийского национального самосознания в середине XIX в. в контексте арабского литературного «Пробуждения» (ан-Нахды). Указанная проблематика требует углубленного изучения для понимания модернизационных процессов в Османской империи в эпоху реформ Танзимата (1839—1876) и особой значимости Бейрута как центра литературно-просветительской издательской деятельности. Гипотеза исследования состоит в том, что идея сирийского патриотизма проявилась в первую очередь в сочинениях Бутруса ал-Бустани и ряда его арабоязычных современников-христиан под влиянием контактов с американскими протестантскими миссионерами, но главным стимулом для ее формирования стали размышления о судьбе христианских общин Сирии после трагических событий 1860 г. в Горном Ливане и Дамаске.

В результате исследования биографических сведений и ключевых тезисов Бутруса ал-Бустани и его единомышленников, отраженных в их сочинениях, представляется возможным сделать вывод о прямом заимствовании ими европейских идей надконфессионального патриотизма и просвещения как средств преодоления общинной замкнутости. Наиболее важным источником для понимания духовно-нравственных и социально-политических вопросов, рассматривавшихся первым поколением арабоязычных деятелей ан-Нахды, следует признать издававшуюся Бутрусом ал-Бустани в 1860—1861 гг. в Бейруте газету «Нафир Сурия». Представители формировавшейся в эпоху ан-Нахды новой христианской интеллектуальной элиты в сирийских провинциях Османской империи призывали к созданию сирийской (сиро-ливанской) надконфессиональной национальной общности по территориальному и этнокультурному признаку, но при этом не оспаривали османский суверенитет и не ставили под сомнение лояльность по отношению к султанской власти.

Abstract

The article examines the activities of Syrian Christian intellectuals and their role in the process of the emergence of Syrian national consciousness in the mid-19th century in the context of the Arabic literary «Awakening» (an-Nahda). The above-mentioned issues require in-depth study to understand the modernization processes in the Ottoman Empire during the era of the Tanzimat reforms (1839—1876) and the special significance of Beirut as a center of literary and educational publishing activities. The hypothesis of the study is that the idea of Syrian patriotism manifested itself, first of all, in the writings of Butrus al-Bustani and a number of his Arabic-speaking Christian contemporaries under the influence of contacts with American Protestant missionaries, but the main impetus for its formation was reflections on the fate of the Christian communities of Syria after the tragic events of 1860 in Mountainous Lebanon and in Damascus. As a result of the study of the biographical information and key theses of Butrus al-Bustani and his associates, reflected in their writings, it seems possible to conclude that they directly borrowed European ideas of supra-confessional patriotism and enlightenment as a means of overcoming communal isolation. The most important source for understanding the spiritual, moral, and socio-political issues considered by the first generation of the an-Nahda Arabic-speaking figures is the «Nafir Suriya» periodical published by Butrus al-Bustani in 1860—1861 in Beirut. Representatives of the new Christian intellectual elite that was forming in the Syrian provinces of the Ottoman Empire during the an-Nahda era called for the creation of a Syrian (Syro-Lebanese) supra-confessional national community on territorial and ethno-cultural grounds, but they did not dispute Ottoman sovereignty or question loyalty to the Sultan’s authority.
