Аннотация
Статья делает попытку раскрыть некоторые ключевые вопросы обороны Козельска весной 1238 г., когда в ходе Батыева нашествия город после семинедельной осады был разгромлен и сожжен. Один из главных вопросов, который ставит перед собой автор – почему сравнительно небольшой по средневековым меркам город продержался в осаде значительно дольше крупнейших центров Средневековой Руси – Старой Рязани, Владимира, Киева и др.? Статья исследует известные источники по данной теме – Ипатьевскую летопись, сведения Рашид-ад-Дина и Юань ши. Кроме этого, анализируется большая часть современной историографии по данной теме, включая выводы археологических экспедиций Г.А. Массалитиной и И.В. Болдина. Представленный анализ позволил сделать определенные выводы о причинах задержки монголов под Козельском.

Abstract
The article attempts to reveal some key issues of the defense of Kozelsk in the spring of 1238, when during the Batu invasion the city was destroyed and burned after a seven-week siege. One of the main questions that the author poses is why a relatively small city by medieval standards held out under siege much longer than the largest centers of Medieval Rus' – such as Old Ryazan, Vladimir, Kiev, etc.? The article examines well-known sources on this topic – the Ipatiev Chronicle, information from Rashid ad-Din and Yuan shi. In addition, a large part of modern historiography on this topic is analyzed, including the findings of the archaeological expeditions of G.A. Massalitina and I.V. Boldin. The presented analysis allowed us to draw certain conclusions about the reasons for the delay of the Mongols near Kozelsk.
