Radulfo Cadomensi. Gesta Tancredi

In the 40th issue of The Historical Reporter, in the Sources section, the reader will find the Latin original and Russian translation of the final 17 chapters of The Deeds of Tancred (Gesta Tancredi) by Ralph of Caen. This is the first attempt, in Russian historiography, to translate the aforementioned part of the well-known work, which has notable significance for the study of Norman expansion in the Mediterranean, the Crusades and the formation of the landscape that became known as «Outremer» («The Land Beyond the Sea») or the Latin East. The re-publication of the original (Latin) text and the first ever publication of the Russian translation are aimed at drawing the attention of professional researchers, as well as a wide range of readers, to the part of Ralph’s history, that deals with the first five years that followed the Crusader conquest of Jerusalem (1100–1105), and which — taking into account the author’s rather emblematic worldview — depict the events not merely from a generally «Latin» or «Frankish», but from a peculiarly Norman perspective.

In the seventeen chapters, Ralph of Caen describes the Easter pilgrimage of Prince Bohemond I of Antioch and Count Baldwin I of Edessa to Jerusalem; the election and enthronement of the first Latin Patriarch of Jerusalem; Bohemond I’s capture in the Battle of Melitene; the death of Godfrey of Bouillon; the succession of Crusader rulers in Antioch, Edessa and Jerusalem (1100–1101); the Tancred’s conquest of Cilicia (1101); the Second Norman Siege and capture of Latakia (1101–1103), supplemented by a unique description of the city itself; the Battle of Harran (1104), with the subsequent retreat to Edessa and the series of military disasters for the Normans (including the second Komnenid conquest of Cilicia and Latakia); Bohemond I’s departure to the West; the start of Tancred’s new campaigns, notably, the sieges of Apamaea and Latakia (1105–1106).
