Abstract

The article covers an obscure episode of Orthodox and Melkite communities rivalry in Syria in the end of the 19th century. Strengthening its superiority over the Orthodox, Uniates attempted to seize the church of St. George in Izraa, one of the oldest Christian temples in the region. For the Orthodox community it was a threat made by surpassing in material well-being enemy backed up by the See of Rome and the French Embassy. The only support to Antioch Patriarchate in the rivalry for its identity was the Russian Empire, a traditional protector of the Orthodox Arabs in the East. Papers of Foreign Policy Archives of the Russian Empire, introduced into scientific usage for the first time, give an opportunity to observe the history of this rivalry that resulted in involving the Ottoman establishment and the Russian Embassy in Constantinople.
