АННОТАЦИЯ
Всего лишь четверть века спустя после падения коммунизма в Евразии демократия, как представляется, оказалась в состоянии тупика и в данном регионе, и по всему миру. В связи с триумфом склонных к авторитаризму популистов повсюду от Венгрии и Польши до Соединенных Штатов Америки многие стали задаваться вопросом, настолько ли будущее глобальной демократии надежно, насколько оно казалось таковым некоторое время тому назад.
По мнению автора, это хороший вопрос, но не резонный. Наблюдая за тем, как граждане голосуют за нелиберальных лидеров в странах, казалось, захваченных демократизацией, следует поставить вопрос о том, почему именно демократия становилась наиболее популярной. Как показано в статье, это происходило потому, что демократия ошибочно воспринималась как панацея от всех болезней общества, от неравенства, от развития коррупции и политического непотизма. Другими словами, демократия превращалась в синоним целого комплекса идей, связанных с человеческим достоинством, о чем страстно мечтает каждый. Однако, демократия, как подчеркивает автор статьи, не может быть всем тем, чего от нее ожидают люди. И в этом заключается проблема. Формируя основу для политического равноправия, демократия не обязательно гарантирует экономическое равенство.
В данной статье рассматривается взаимосвязь между человеческим достоинством, революцией и демократизацией с учетом эволюции их понимания. Автор доказывает, что в тех случаях, когда революционеры прибегали к лозунгам борьбы за человеческое достоинство, стремясь мобилизовать население с различными идеологическими целями, логика развития международных демократических норм, начиная с середины XX в., не оставляла им иной альтернативы, кроме демократии. Обсуждение последствий данного процесса предваряется в статье несколькими кейсами.
